Availability and price

Samsung unveiled the Galaxy S24 at a dedicated Galaxy Unpacked event held on 17 January, alongside the Samsung Galaxy S24 Plus and Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra.

At launch the standard S24 was priced from £799 when bought SIM-free.

Design

The Samsung Galaxy S24 features a new, slightly tweaked design, with flatter edges and smaller bezels, not dissimilar to that found on the rival iPhone 15.

A toughened ‘Armour Aluminium’ frame claims to be able to prevent dents and scratches when the device is dropped on hard surfaces.

And a high, IP68 water and dustproof rating means that the Galaxy S24 can handle being immersed in water up to 1.5 metres deep for half an hour.

Camera

The triple lens camera system on the Galaxy S24 is much the same as that found on the Samsung Galaxy S23.

That means a 50MP main lens, backed up with a 12MP wide angle and 10MP telephoto lens, with optical zoom reaching up to 3x. The front-facing selfie camera clocks in at 12MP, the same as the 2023 edition.

What promises to give the Galaxy S24 is the new AI-backed software, with the ability to move and delete in-photo objects, edit backgrounds and even take people out of videos.

In a first, the Galaxy S24 is able to upload HDR images to Instagram, giving it the edge when it comes to socials.

Video shooting stretches to 8K, with 4K and 1080p for those who don’t feel the need to go all in on Ultra HD home movies.

Specs

The Samsung Galaxy S24 features the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon Gen 3 processor, although in the UK this is likely to be replaced by the still impressive, Samsung-made Exynos 2400.

Either way, each will make switching between apps and using the Galaxy S24 smooth and breezy.

AI makes a major appearance too, with AI wallpapers, photo-assisting features such as the ability to move and remove objects and machine-based transcription of voice notes.

Samsung has also unveiled plans to use AI to help compose messages and translate voice calls and text chats in 13 different languages in real time.

A new ‘Circle to Search’ feature, built by Google and debuting on the Galaxy S24, will see users be able to circle on screen items to search them via Google, all using AI smarts.

The Galaxy S24 comes with Google’s Android 14 and Samsung’s own sharp, One UI on top, making it easy and straightforward to use.
