iPhone 14 Pro Max at a glance
Apple's top-of-the-range flagship of 2022, the iPhone 14 Pro Max is a true powerhouse.
Straight out of the box, the iPhone 14 Pro Max doesn't look too different from the previous year's iPhone 13 Pro Max. Switch it on, however, and you'll find plenty of exciting new upgrades, including an always-on display, a 48MP camera and a powerful A16 Bionic processor that offers unrivalled performance.
Most interesting is the pill-shaped cut-out that replaces the notch on the front screen. It's not just for aesthetic purposes – Apple has introduced a new "Dynamic Island" feature, which cleverly morphs the cut-out to display alerts, notifications and background activities.
Availability and price
The price of the iPhone 14 Pro Max at launch is £1199 for 128GB, £1309 for 256GB, £1529 for 512GB and £1749 for 1TB.
It was available to pre-order from 9 September 2022.
Design
As with the past few generations of iPhone, the iPhone 14 Pro Max retains the same Ceramic Shield front, glass back and aluminium wraparound frame.
However, the screen sets it apart from previous models. The camera notch has been replaced by a smaller cut-out, which frees up valuable screen space. More impressively, Apple has incorporated it into the new "Dynamic Island" feature. This is a notification system that morphs the cut-out to display what you're doing – for example, to display the music you're playing, or any timers you have.
Furthermore, the new Always-on display comes in handy – without having to tap the phone at all, you'll be able to check the time, as well as any other widgets you’ve enabled.
Camera
As with all Pro and Pro Max models, the iPhone 14 Pro Max has a triple camera system on the back, consisting of one main lens, one ultra wide and one telephoto.
One significant upgrade is the main camera, which has been bumped up to an impressive 48MP. This means mind-blowing resolution and amazing detail in your snaps. There’s also a 3x optical Telephoto zoom, promising up to 2x better low-light photography.
For budding videographers, Apple’s coveted Cinematic Mode now shoots in the film industry standard of 4K HDR at 24fps. There's also a new Action Mode, which stabilises shaky filming to produce smooth handheld videos.
