If you’ve always wanted a bigger screen with regular iPhone features, Apple has introduced the iPhone 14 Plus: a phone with the same specs as the standard model, but with a 6.7-inch display like the Pro Max.
It’s ideal for those who don’t want to shell out for the powerful Pro Max, but want a bigger screen for easier viewing.
Other than size, Apple has kept things largely the same as the previous year’s iPhone 13. The iPhone 14 Plus is powered by the same A15 Bionic chip, and it features the same design, dual camera system and Super Retina XDR display.
It has, however, introduced a couple of new safety features: Crash Detection, which detects if you’ve been in a crash and contacts emergency services, and Emergency SOS via satellite, which will connect you to emergency services via text even if you have no signal.
Availability and price
The price of the iPhone 14 Plus at launch is £949 for 128GB, £1059 for 256GB and £1279 for 512GB.
It was available to pre-order from 9 September 2022.
Design
As with the past few generations of iPhone, the iPhone 14 Plus retains the same Ceramic Shield front, glass back and aluminium wraparound frame.
And it’s kept the same dual diagonal rear camera array as the iPhone 13, as well as the same notch size on the front.
It comes in five colourways: Blue, Purple, Midnight (black), Starlight (white) and Product Red.
Camera
On paper, there’s no bump up in camera hardware. Like the previous year’s iPhone 13, it sports one main 12MP lens and one 12MP Ultra Wide.
Nevertheless, the iPhone 14 Plus does present a few refinements. For example, Apple’s Photonic Engine computational photography software means better low-light performance, capturing more detail in challenging shooting conditions.
There’s also a new Action mode for video, which stabilises shaky handheld videos.
If you enjoy taking selfies, you’ll be pleased that the new TrueDepth front camera comes with a wider f/1.9 aperture and autofocus.

Given that it’s an expensive Apple flagship, most contracts for a brand new iPhone 14 Plus will come with an upfront cost.
Is the iPhone 14 Plus worth buying in 2024?
At the time of writing (September 2022), it’s currently part of Apple’s latest line-up. So, if you’re itching to get your hands on the most up-to-date tech, it’s well worth considering – particularly if you have an older phone, or want a bigger screen.
However, as it’s a recently released phone, it comes with a high price tag. If you have a phone from the previous year, like the iPhone 13, the minor upgrades may not be worth the cost.
In which case, it’ll be better to wait to see what the iPhone 15 has in store.
What’s the difference between iPhone 14 Plus and iPhone 13?
The main difference is size: the iPhone 14 Plus’ 6.7-inch display makes for easier viewing than the iPhone 13’s 6.1-inch screen. Plus, a larger phone means a bigger battery capacity.
