Google Pixel 8 Design
The Google Pixel 8 has a 6.2-inch screen with a resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels. It’s slightly smaller than the Pixel 7’s screen, but not noticeably so. And it goes brighter (up to 2000 nits compared to 1400 nits on the Pixel 7), which makes it easier to see in bright sunshine. It also has a higher refresh rate (120Hz compared to 90Hz) meaning less blur during fast-moving content like games.
Google Pixel 8 Camera specifications
The Google Pixel 8 has an upgraded 50MP main camera, and a 12MP ultra-wide lens (which has auto focus, which the Pixel 7’s lacks). The front-facing camera has a slightly lower resolution than the Pixel 7’s, but a slightly wider field of view, so you’ll be able to fit in more people during group selfies.
There’s also a plethora of AI-powered photo editing features, such as Magic Editor (which lets you move parts of the scene, erase unwanted objects and play around with lighting) and Best Take (which lets you choose the best expressions when taking a series of photos).
Is Google Pixel 8 worth buying now?
The Pixel 8 certainly looks impressive. It offers a decent level of upgrades over last year’s Pixel 7, namely with its Tensor G3 chipset and powerful AI capabilities. However, with the iPhone 15 launching recently, it’s up against some stiff competition.
If you’re looking for a new Android phone, it could be a good bet, especially if you like Google’s unique camera features like the ability to swap people’s faces in photos. But unless you’re desperate for a new Android phone, it would be worth waiting until early next year, when Samsung unveils its latest Galaxy S smartphone.
Google Pixel phones tend to hold their SIM-free price for a year, but we could see contract deal prices start to come down over time.
Can I get the Google Pixel 8 with no upfront cost?
You can buy the Google Pixel 8 with no upfront cost, but only on a SIM-free basis. The 128GB model costs £699, while the 256GB option is £759.
On contract, you’ll have to pay an upfront fee, though currently you can get it for as little as £9 upfront (this will mean higher monthly fees). To see it, and to see which other phones are available with no upfront cost, check out our guide to phones with no upfront cost.
